Contemporary Pavilion Adjoins Historic Farm in The Netherlands

This property in The Netherlands is home to Château St. Gerlach, a historic gem that currently runs as a five-star hotel. The complex, which includes the original estate farmhouse, convent and grain lofts, is located in a hilly countryside landscape in Limburg, a short drive from Maastricht city center.

Mecanoo architecten recently added a contemporary 14,000 square-foot pavilion to this property, which acts as a meeting space for guests and is a cutting-edge landmark for the region.

“The transparent, state-of-the-art pavilion has a cantilevered roof with a beautiful curve,” the architects explained. “From the pavilion, guests will have views over the château, the hills, the meadow and the manor farm. The materials used are inspired by the natural surrounding of Limburg: marlstone, bluestone and oak. The three large multifunctional meeting rooms can be used separately or combined, offering a unique location for a variety of meetings and events.”

The architects also renovated the manor farm on the estate, a national monument dating to 1668. It now houses meeting venues and a beautiful café that serves lunch and drinks for the local community. Photography: Mecanoo architecten
