Alfredo Vanotti completed the design of Casa VI, a private residence located in the Orobie Alps, at 3280 feet above sea level in Piateda, Italy. The owner wanted to convert the ruins of the existing structure on the site into an energy-efficient retreat with extensive views of the valley.
The principle that guided the architects’ work throughout the building process was that the mountain home had to be sustainable. The compact home blends into the environment thanks to the stone and glass facade with larch window frames and doors. The ground floor hosts the living room, kitchen, and bathroom, while upstairs there are two bedrooms and a loft used as office space.
The interior is made up of mixed materials, including reinforced concrete, natural larch and iron. Minimalist furniture is arranged to direct attention towards the majestic mountain views. “I wanted to give great importance to the local craftsmanship, trying to create all the pieces from my personal design,” Vanotti said, “The fireplace, table, chairs, stairs, bidet, and sink were all handcrafted with the help of a skilled team.” [Photos courtesy of Alfredo Vanotti]
What do you think is the biggest perk about living in this mountain home?
