“New year, new you” doesn’t only have to pertain to gym memberships and budgeting resolutions. It can also extend to your interiors. Why not use the turn of the calendar year as an opportunity to look at the rooms of your home in an entirely new light?

With this sentiment in mind, we’ve come up with four easy-to-follow 2018 interior design resolutions. You don’t have to tackle them all at once, but we suggest reading them over and choosing one or two to help give your home a fresh look for the new year without breaking the bank.

Refresh your layout

We love this tip because it doesn’t have to cost you a thing! If a room in your home is feeling stale, one thing you can do to breathe new life into the space is to refresh the layout. First, try rearranging the furniture. Break up your existing layouts and try out new configurations.

Don’t limit yourself to the room’s current inventory either. Consider shaking things up by taking overlooked furniture from another room and giving it a new home. Sometimes a new perspective is all you need.

Go big with color

Big, bold colors are here to stay in 2018. It only makes sense that you would want to get in on the trend – but being trendy doesn’t need to break the bank. As always, bold accessories are a relatively low-cost way to participate. Things like bright throw pillows, area rugs, and décor pieces all fit the bill nicely.

Alternatively, if you’re willing to go with something a little more permanent, you could consider painting an accent wall or adding an accent piece of furniture. Paint cost pennies on the dollar compared to most design elements and can be matched to almost any shade. Existing furniture can be transformed into an accent piece through the aid of a decent slipcover.

Make a statement

One large, eye-catching statement piece can do a lot to change up a room. Architectural elements like built-in’s or a fireplace are excellent choices if you have them at your disposal. If not, you can create your own by purchasing items like a piece of wall art, a sizable mirror, or even a great area rug.

The key here is to create visual interest. If you have one or more of the above elements on hand already, you can easily keep this project budget-friendly by going the DIY route and using a tutorial to give your existing product an eye-popping color or finish.

If you need to buy your statement item, don’t forget that, in addition to saving up, there are plenty of lower-cost methods like shopping secondhand that will help you get the look you love without breaking the bank.

edit your design

Edit your design

This is another tip that has the advantage of being completely free of cost. One thing that often allows professional interior designers to bring their work to the next level is their ability to edit their work. They make tough decisions about whether or not a design element is adding to the overall aesthetic and act accordingly.

For some, this is difficult. After all, who doesn’t have a tendency to let clutter accumulate over time? From time to time, practicing a little judgment-free editing can go a long way towards allowing the best parts of your design to shine.

To do this, consider a room’s function first. Leave the room’s main functional elements in place and one-by-one remove any excess décor items that may have found their way into the space. On an individual basis, decide whether each item adds value to the room. If it does, return it to its original spot. If not, find it a new home.
