Deliciously dark decor meets raw industrial aesthetics in this 300-square-meter modern home, designed by Elena Sedova. Nestled in the heart of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this spellbinding residence showcases a fusion of contemporary design elements and captivating contrasts. Moody wooden accent walls and a matching lattice ceiling spread deep, lustrous tones, setting the stage for an atmosphere of refined opulence and sophistication. Alongside this dark elegance is the raw magnetism of unadorned concrete decor, which adds a rugged, urban edge to the interior. The harmonious union of these opposing forces creates a space with great depth and wonder, where light and shadow reveal and conceal, and luxury takes on a truly distinctive form.
Instant impact is made by a dark wood backdrop of walnut kitchen cabinets and a dominating wood lattice ceiling treatment. The enveloping shadows close around a lighter floor of bare, gray concrete and light living room furniture. In pride of place, the striking wavy chair with ottoman set is the iconic 1970s Etcetera chair, designed by Jan Ekselius. Its undulating silhouette is fabulously highlighted under this atmospheric lighting scheme, where softness and spotlight coexist.
A white living room rug quietly melds with the pale gray microcement floor. Large format white marble tiles climb a feature wall behind the Etcetera chair reproduction. A linear wall light illuminates the luxe stone statement.
Dark walnut bookcases completely cover one wide wall in the living room, making space for the resident’s beloved library of books and a small number of decorative items. LED ribbons gently highlight the shelves, aiding the selection of reading material and spotlighting precious trinkets.
Indoor plants thrive in the natural light that makes its way through large glass doors. A view of the homeowner’s prized sports cars unfolds in the driveway beyond the frame.
A black glass coffee table creates a dark heart in the center of the light sitting area. A small floor lamp rests beside a basic beige ottoman, rounding out the reading lounge.
Modern dining room chandeliers draw fresh notes of white into the dark dining room decor scheme. Black track lights shine like starlight from the shadowy ceiling.
A wooden dining bench furnishes one side of the dark walnut dining table, while modern dining chairs seat six more.
A coffee table book, a small decorative bowl, and an arch sculpture make up a contemporary dining table centerpiece.
The wooden dining table design features a concave leg profile that creates added visual interest against the pale gray concrete floor.
The dining room chairs carry a light greige upholstery to contrast the dark walnut elements. The chairs’ rounded wooden backs perfectly complement the curved dining room pendant light concept.
A second linear wall light calls focus to a raw concrete wall, which gives the formal dining room and kitchen a cool, industrial edge.
The kitchen island has a sleek, white marble aesthetic that ties in luxuriously with the marble feature wall in the home library area. The light stone contrasts dramatically against a full wall of dark walnut kitchen units and black integrated appliances.
The monolithic marble kitchen island is equipped with an induction hob with an integrated extractor fan, which keeps the look peacefully streamlined. A sunken storage niche organizes kitchen utensils and seasonings. A linear suspension light threads the full length of the central kitchen island, brightly illuminating the prep area.
A minimalist kitchen faucet fills an integrated white marble sink from the side, where its elegant profile can be fully appreciated.
A black stone wall textures one end of the kitchen run, creating drama and depth. A modern wall light burns through the shadows.
At the back of the kitchen, a wine storage wall builds a panel of soft illumination. The lines of low light dance over the glass bottles, igniting an air of mystery.
Raw concrete walls and a matching concrete ceiling construct an industrial aesthetic in the master bedroom. Dual aspect windows expand across an entire two walls of the room, revealing a rustic stone garden wall that becomes a characterful aspect of the gray decor scheme.
A walnut end of bed bench darkly coordinates with the bedstead and headboard design. A glass wall ensuite bathroom reveals a swathe of luxe white marble panels with a prominent gray vein. A floor-to-ceiling window invites a sliver of natural sunlight and a garden view into the master bathroom, brightening a walk-in shower area.
Bold black modern wall sconces and a pair of small, directional wall lights provide focussed reading light. A gray duvet, assorted throw pillows, and a dark gray bed runner make a crisp, tonal arrangement.
Plush gray drapes heavily frame the huge bedroom windows.
Walnut nightstands meld with the dark headboard.
A carafe and glass tumbler set equip the floating bedside table.
A glass-fronted wardrobe disrupts the shadows of the bedroom entryway with its illuminated clothing rails and backlit garment shelves. A huge, circular ceiling light sends diffused light over the moody bedroom decor scheme. Directional spotlights distribute subtle lighting over the wider area.
Wooden planks lighten the bedroom floor. A soft greige bedroom rug lays down a cozy layer.
A comfortable bedroom chair is teamed with a chic white marble table and a designer table lamp to fashion an inviting reading nook. Outdoor plants and an indoor olive tree grow a gorgeous green background to literary adventures.
