A Winning Bet on Kazoo House

This home addition, a project of the Melbourne based architecture firm Architects EAT, was built in the Melbourne suburb of Caulfield. The neighborhood is famous for the local horse track, and this project honors that local history.

The home, entitled “The Kazoo House,” was named after the racehorse whose winnings helped fund its transformation. The original structure contained the working stable for it’s namesake. Completed in 2014, the project was an addition designed for four people.

The name is not the only inspiration that horse racing has brought the home: The nearby watch towers of the racecourse are mirrored in the steel skin of this home addition. The steel structure provides a lovely contrast to the existent brick architecture.

Two courtyards allow for plentiful outdoor activities, including viewing the nearby racecourse: the house, built a mere stone’s throw away from Caulfield’s racing tracks, gives an advantageous view of the exciting sport from a raised viewing platform.
