This small apartment on two levels is located in a stone building in the heart of the historical center of Bordeaux, France. “The challenge of this rehabilitation was to design a small space in which all the functions of a larger apartment would be present,” the architects at L’atelier miel.
The main asset of the 485 square-foot crib is its great brightness; the small home features ten windows, enabling it to benefit from all orientations (North, South, East, West). Upgraded chestnut flooring and wooden shelves add to the warm atmosphere.
All the living functions — working, eating, sleeping — are creatively organized on different levels. As you enter, you will be drawn to the bookshelf along one of the walls, which is raised on a podium. This platform at the base can be used as a worktop, storage cabinet and reading corner. Can you believe a few mattresses and a lamp can create such a cozy reading refuge?
The opposite wall adjoins the laundry and stairs, with integrated storage. A kitchen island accessible from all sides makes the crib particularly versatile. Upstairs, you will find the bathroom and bedroom, which is large enough for a double bed and dresser. [Photography: Mickaël Martins Afonso]
